Batch brew coffee

Updated: Aug 11, 2021

The general impression of batch brew coffee is that the coffee is a cheaper and faster black coffee alternative.

However, some of the best filter coffee that we have had so far was actually one brewed from a batch brew coffee machine.

It left us an impression after we visited these specialty cafes; Patricia Coffee Brewers and Proudmary in Melbourne, Australia, and Andersen & Maillard in Denmark, which happens that they were serving batch brew coffee on the menu.

The speed of service was quick, the coffee was flavourful and you could identify the different attributes of the coffee. Easily one of the best coffee experiences that we really enjoy so far.

In our experience, with the right recipe dialled into the batch brew coffee maker, we find that a bigger batch allows the coffee to taste better with a bigger margin of error.

Here are a few things happening over here that contributes to greater tasting coffee;

The coffee powder actually provides resistance which helps with the filtering effect, hence you would need to use a coarser grind setting when brewing a bigger batch.

With a coarser grind setting to compensate for the increased resistance from a higher dose of coffee being used, it reduces the number of fines produces as compared to a finer grind setting of a single-dose pour-over.

Last but not least, brewing a bigger batch helps with the increase in the thermostability of the brew as the slurry (brew bed), thus able to contain more of the heat as compared to a single-dose pour-over set-up, increasing the extraction of more flavour compounds.

In short, when it is properly executed, batch brew coffee can taste really great, with higher consistentency as a method of brewing.

The next time you come across a specialty coffee serving a batch brew, give it a try and let us know if you enjoy the same experience as we do!

Thanks for sharing! What coffee under the Single Profile Coffee collection would you recommend for a batch brew? I'm thinking of making some for my family in the morning

Hello Yu Chen,

Our coffee is roasted in a single roast profile approach, which means it can be brew using any brew method, including batch brew.

We would recommend the following ratio:

- 55-60 grams of medium-coarse setting grind size coffee powder to 1 litre of filtered water (adjust to your preference in terms of intensity on mouthfeel and/or flavour).

Cheers!
